Princess Basma Center, Jerusalem

1st - 17th July 2010

Under Christian leadership, and together with Christian and Muslim staff from the Centre the Highway Projects team will help with the Centre's 'in-patient’ summer camp involving mainly Muslim disabled children. Using sport, drama, music, cookery, art and craft skills, as well as accompanying children on outings, the aim of the project is to help parents see that disability need not limit children's social development.

2009's team leader Issy Phillips reports on last year's activities:

"The Basma team this year continued to build on the relationships Highway has been developing in the center for the last decade. We were privileged to be working alongside very skilled and able staff with children with a range of disabilities and social problems. The team was involved in hydrotherapy sessions, occupational therapy, group physiotherapy sessions, as well as lots of singing, dancing, playing, crafts and cooking. It was brilliant to be able to serve in this way, and care for these incredible kids.

One way in which we were really able to share God's love is in our relationships with the teachers and mothers. The teachers are the same year on year, and so the fact that Highway Projects has returned each year with new volunteers and renewed enthusiasm has been a real testament to our commitment. Another great area of the work was with the mothers of the disabled kids. Where we were able to build up real friendships with them, and share some of the freedom and joy that comes from God. It was just wonderful!"
