Holy Land Institute for the Deaf, SALT
26th Aug - 10th September
The Holy Land Institute for the Deaf is a residential school providing rehabilitation, education and vocational training for hearing and visually impaired children and young people. Alongside full time volunteers, and under the guidance of the local site manager, the Highway Projects team will work on the on-going building project at ‘STRIDE’. As well as time spent building and decorating there is also time for the team to spend with the children who live residentially at the school, and learn some Jordanian sign language. The aim is to offer practical support to the Institute. This is a great opportunity to do something practical to help support those with disability.

2007's team leader Helen Hollingworth reports on the year's work:
A team of 8 were in Salt once again this year at the Holy Land Institute for the Deaf. We painted 7 class rooms and 2 corridors under the supervision of Essa, the maintenance person at the school who is himself deaf. It was a new challenge to communicate with him about work but in a surprisingly short space of time we were able to understand one another and enjoyed our time with him.
It was also a real thrill to see the faces of the children as they returned to their classes and saw the new paint. Brother Andrew emphasised the point that it is good for the children to be in well maintained surroundings as it gives them the impression that they too can excel. If their class rooms are shabby they will not be encouraged to work so hard if they feel such standards are acceptable.
We gelled together very well as a team and we were welcomed with open arms by staff and children at the Institute and our communications with them were joyful and uplifting. Despite the deafness, they have a freedom which is inspirational to all those who meet them.
We also enjoyed a day at Bethany by the Jordan, witnessing a baptism, and then spending the afternoon floating in the Dead Sea.
