Fairhaven School, Alexandria
March 16th - 31st, 2010
Working alongside the local staff at the school, vocational centre and the Hope and Healing Medical Centre, the Highway Projects team will assist in supporting those with a variety of mental and physical disabilities.
Living alongside the residential young people the team will be able to offer new teaching skills through arts crafts, and sport, and any medically trained volunteers
will have a great opportunity to support a very worthwhile piece of healing work at the medical centre, based in a very poor area of the city.

2009's team leader Laura Gill writes about the project:
This year in Fairhaven we led the children in a variety of ‘Fruit and Vegetable’ themed craft activities- making tomato shaped finger puppets, pineapple smiley-faced masks, painting apple trees and a large grape vine in the school corridors with paper apples and grapes to hang off them. It was wonderful to see how bright and colourful the school looked after we had been teaching.
We also incorporated drama and storytelling to bring the fruits and vegetables to life and ended our time in the school with a Hungry Caterpillar style performance in each classroom, using songs, craft and puppetry.
We lived alongside some of the students who board at the school, and there was plenty of time in the evenings to build friendships and spend time with them, which we found to be especially rewarding.
Fairhaven is part of the ministry of the local church and we were welcomed into their congregation and were able to worship together and share something of our work with them. We were also able to visit another area of their ministry, a medical centre to serve the poor. This was a fascinating insight into the local community and a real privilege to be able to visit.
My lasting memory of Fairhaven is of a place filled with wonderful people. The staff are so warm and welcoming, and the children so filled with joy that it is impossible not to have a huge smile on your face!
Come to Fairhaven if you are prepared for cutting out, playing games, getting sticky, being challenged, talking and laughing, blowing bubbles….but most of all, showing love and being loved.
