Deaf Unit, Cairo

March 21st - April 4th 2009

Working alongside the Director, Deputy Director, and the staff of the Vocational Centre, the Highway Projects team will support the school, Vocational Centre and Deaf Club for children and teenagers through art, craft, computer work, outdoor games.

There will be opportunities to offer new skills into the school life, and demonstrate new techniques for working with the deaf. This all supports work in the developing Deaf Church within Egypt.

2009's team leader Ali Cusworth reports on this year's activities:

"The Deaf Unit in Cairo has 3 main strands to its’ work; the Deaf School which educates and cares for 60+ children on a boarding basis, the Vocational Training Centre and the Deaf Club. The great thing about this project is that we get totally immersed into the life of the Unit, primarily the school. This year, the Highway Projects team built on the work and relationships it had developed in 2008;

-Delivering English and craft classes to the children

-Post school activities with the children; a combination of spending time doing various games in the playground and doing craft activities

-Delivering English lessons to the teaching staff to help and encourage them with their English

-Working with the staff at VTC and children to create the Empty Tomb scene and Easter cross outside in the grounds of the Unit

-And there was also some involvement in the Church Services and Bible Studies at the Deaf Church on site.

It was another great year – both the children and staff were so pleased and excited to see us back. They have so much patience with us, given we have little knowledge of Egyptian sign language, but we get by! Our relationship with the children and staff was great, we shared many laughs and have many memories. It was so good to spend time getting to know the staff more - their command of English grammar was far better than ours – not sure who was teaching who! Above all, it was our love for the children that really shone through. A year of Blessings and Privileges.

It’s great fun getting about the madness of Cairo every day – you should try it ! "
